bryce and I are cutting off our cable television. we've been saying it for a while now - it's such a waste of money for us since we don't watch that much tv. at about $100 a month you'd expect some good television, but whenever we sit down to watch something there is never anything on all those 800 channels... so, with a combination of hulu, abc.com and netflix we can watch everything we want at the time we want. we can pause it. rewind it. watch again. if we want to. I also downloaded boxee the other night, but haven't played around with it too much. so to me it seems like a no-brainer...
I was tidying up my netflix list this morning and wondering if anyone has any recommendations for must watch movies I should add to my queue?

Unfortunately, I don't have netflix. My boss does though, and every once in a while I use it at home to watch the instant movies that they offer. I too have stopped watching tv and the only time it is ever really on now is when there are sports on - the bf insists on it. When I paint I usually like to watch movies instead, but every so often it's nice to have just junk on (like when I'm cleaning up or puttering around), but I've definitely found that I don't get as much done when the TV is on. I still follow a few shows, but I watch them on the internet while taking a bath, which is much nicer. I do love hoarders though, and intervention...a few of my guilty pleasures on cable. We probably wouldn't have cable either, but we steal it and don't pay for it...don't tell!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing a lot of things about an old movie called 'Grey Gardens', a documentary made in 1975 about these women who live in a mansion and their lives. I guess they are somewhat sociopaths and hoarders too (yes!), and I know that's on netflix. Haven't seen it yet though...
Also, I don't know if you have one of these but if you get an S-Video cable you can plug in your computer to your tv, so the screen is on the tv instead of watching your tiny computer screen. If you have a laptop...I mean. This works wonders for us when we are watching movies or tv from our laptop, but want it a bit bigger...so worth the $15!
I laughed out loud at this post and just had to comment. Years ago, I had THE most boring desk job, but luckily so did my best friend. To break up the monotony, she'd call me once a week and we'd go through our Netflix list to make sure we were watching all the right things! As a result, I'm still trying to get through all 312 in my queue. Ha.
ReplyDeleteAs for recommendations, my all time favorite movies include, “Singles,” “Amelie,” “Usual Suspects” and “Dazed and Confused.” (Disclaimer #1: that may have been because we turned the word “dude” into a drinking game back in the day.) Queue-worthy recs I’ve been given recently include: “Maria Full of Grace,” “Last Kind of Scotland,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” and every single episode of “Flight of the Conchords, Weeds, and 6 Feet Under.” (Disclaimer #2: I really hope these don’t suck!)

I watch most things via internet streaming now - I spend a ton of time on the internet, and the amount of times I've had shows ruined by inadvertent spoilers is ridiculous. The UK is so far behind America and Australia :-(
ReplyDeleteAs for good movies, I recommend An Education (it's EXCELLENT). And for some older recommendations: Closer (if you haven't seen it already...it's one of my favourites) and Garden State (such a gorgeous film which never fails to make me feel like life is beautiful.
Great decision! Life is Beautiful is one of my faves (you will bawl, though), and I hadn't seen American Beauty until Stan put it on our list (loved it). I always whine when he puts old Clint Eastwood/WWII/westerns on there, but then I always end up loving them. Lonely are the Brave is pretty good, and Where Eagles Dare, and of course Dr. Strangelove. You might like Angels in America. This American Life is a goodie. Oh and you have to get The Triplets of Belleville! Triplets of Belleville is my #1 pick. :-)
